Rats are mammals and vertebrates. Rats are digitigrades, which means they only walk on their toes, versus humans, which are plantigrades. Plantigrades walk on their toes and metatarsals flat on the ground. Rats are mammals because they have a backbone (vertebrates), they are warm-blooded (endothermic), have hair on their bodies, and are able to produce milk to feed their babies.
